A proposal for a surf waves project on the river Robe in Ballinrobe town centre was presented to members of the Claremorris Municipal District meeting at this week’s monthly meeting of the authority.

Ballinrobe is located about 40 km from the sea- but the idea, that has had international success, is to form a large surge of water in a river and introduce waves that attract surfers and kayakers.

Local man Chris Harness made the proposal and he is seeking funding for a feasibility study for the conceptual design of the waves, through the moulding of the Robe’s river bed.

The proposal received unanimous support from elected councillors at this early stage.

The cost of the proposed works to produce the surf waves is estimated at approx 200,000 euro.

Mr Harness toldMidwest News today that he is seeking an endorsement from local councillors for the proposal, and is also looking to generate 10,000 euro to complete a feasibility study and a design of what he believes will be a valuable piece of public infrastructure for south Mayo.
