The Irish playwright Tom Murphy has died at the age of 83.
A native of Tuam in Co Galway, Mr Murphy was associated with the Druid Theatre in Galway and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and is known for works including A Whistle in the Dark and Conversations on a Homecoming.
Born in Tuam, the youngest of ten children, he trained as a metal work teacher, and began writing in the late 1950’s.
Between 1959 and 2014, he wrote 26 plays and one novel.
President Michael D. Higgins has been paying tribute, saying that Tom Murphy's contribution to Irish theatre is immeasurable and outstanding.
