Mayo has retained its 12 Blue Flag beach awards for 2018.
An Taisce has today announced the international Blue Flag and Green Coast Award recipients for 2018.
The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels, and a record 90 beaches and marinas in Ireland have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag this year – an increase of two on last year.
The Blue Flag is an award of excellence, for beaches and marinas that comply with strict criteria relating to water quality, safety, facilities for visitors, beach management, environmental education and the provision of information.
Co Kerry is leading the way with 14 blue flag beaches, with 13 for Donegal and 12 for Mayo –the same as last year.
Mayo’s Blue Flag beaches are Bertra, Carrowmore, Clare Island, Dooega, Elly Bay, Golden Strand, Keel, Keem, Mullaghroe, Mulranny, Silverstrand Dugort and Ross, Killala.
In addition, 59 beaches in Ireland- including 7 in Mayo – have been presented with Green Coast Awards for 2018.
Tranaun on Inisturk is a first-time recipient of the award this year.
