As the Junior and Leaving cert exams get underway today , a record 37 percent of students have registered to sit higher level maths.

That's up from around 20 percent in 2011 following the introduction of bonus points for the more challenging paper.

Around 121 thousand pupils are sitting exams in 5 thousand test centres around the country.

Deputy Director of SpunOut.ie, Jack Deacon, says students shouldn't put too much pressure on themselves, advising that there are many pathways to careers.
