The man who died in a single vehicle road accident on the N5 near Swinford on Saturday evening has been named.

John Patrick Hannon who was in his 70’s lost his life when the SUV he was driving left the road and struck a wall on the Swinford side of the Ballymiles pub in Ballinvoher.

Mr. Hannon from Ballymote was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His remains were brought to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem examination.

He was a former Christian Brother who taught with the Order in many countries and was a leading figure in the Ballymote Active Retirement Group.

Gardaí in Swinford are continuing to investigate the accident and are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0949252990 or the Garda confidential line on 1800666111.

No funeral arrangements have yet been announced.
