Just over a mile is now confirmed as the furthest anyone will have to walk to access Knock Shrine from any car park on Sunday morning next for the visit of pope Francis.

That was confirmed today by Garda Superintendent Tom Calvey of Claremorris garsda station.

That is a considerably shorter distance than was anticipated some weeks ago by the gardai, as many pilgrims have taken on the advice, and have now opted to travel by coach or use public transport.

There will be car parking facilities for the majority of car users on Sunday at Ballyhowley, just over a mile from Knock Shrine, the rest will be accommodated at a car park on the Kiltimagh side of Knock, close to the turn for the N17 as you approach the village.

Anyone arriving by bus or coach will have less than a mile to walk to the Shrine.

Supt Calvey told Midwest News today that it is absolutely essential that anyone arriving in Knock on Sunday has a ticket for the event.
