Well-known Mayo based Judge, Mary Devins, confirmed to court staff last week that she intends to retire from her role.
The Western People are reporting this morning that the Derry native is understood to be on holidays for a number of weeks but will finish up by officially announcing her retirement to the rest of the members of the judiciary in mid to late October.
She is currently being deputised by former Longford solicitor, Deirdre Gearty.
Judge Devins was appointed to the District court in October 1998 and was transferred from the Dublin Metropolitan District to Mayo the following year where she remained for the rest of her high-profile career.
She had previously practiced as a solicitor in Sligo, where she still lives.
She is married to medical doctor and former Fianna Fail TD Jimmy Devins.
