Figures released today by Gardai at the National Ploughing Championships show that €1.4 million worth of goods was stolen from farms across Ireland in the last year.
This includes animals worth €350,000.
The number of incidents involving the theft of cattle and horses increased, while incidents involving sheep, poultry and pigs decreased.
Over the past 12 months, 150 vehicles were stolen from farms -with quad bikes and tractors most commonly taken.
One in 3 tractors and 3 out of 4 vans stolen had the key in the vehicle, and Gardai are urging farmers to store keys safely.
They're also advising farmers to lock gates, light up their yards and sign up for Community Text alerts.
