Despite severe overcrowding at the Emergency Dept of Sligo University Hospital at times over the past summer, additional beds to deal with a likely increase in patients over the winter months have not been sanctioned.

That was confirmed  by HSE West management  in response to a question submitted by Independent Leitrim Cllr Phelim Gurn at last week’s HSE West Forum meeting in Galway.

The Councillor believes additional flu vaccines should be provided to reduce the number of patients presenting at the hospital.

HSE Management explained that while the hospital has made a submission for 46 additional medical beds at the facility, a decision on the funding application for these beds is still awaited. In the meantime, a number of internal initiatives are underway to assist in improved discharging and patient flow in the hospital.
