Transport Infrastructure Ireland has recommended that an overbridge be put in place at the Lisduff junction on the N17 outside Claremorris.
This stretch of the N17 was described recently by the Coroner for Mayo Patrick O'Connor as extraordinaril dangerous, following inquests into the deaths of three people from one north Mayo family, who were killed instantly when their car was struck by a lorry at the N17 junction at Lisduff, Claremorris over a year ago.
Following the inquest, the Coroner said driving on that stretch of road was like Russian Roulette, and he called on the authorities responsible to take action to prevent further accidents.
The TII has now reviewed the situation and, in conjunction with Mayo County Council's Road Design Office, has recommended that an overbridge is the only solution at the Lisduff junction with the N17, while an overpass is needed at the Knock Airport junction.
Claremorris-based Independent Councillor Richard Finn says it has been recommended that consultants be appointed to progress these urgent issues.
