A Claremorris Municipal District Councillor has proposed that if Mayo County Council is intending to carry out substantial road works programmes, then detour routes should be upgraded to a suitable standard prior to works beginning and adequate signage put in place.
Fine Gael Cllr John Cribben made the proposal at this week’s meeting of Claremorris Municipal District after hearing of a situation recently in his area.
Major road works took place between Tavrane and Ballyhaunis and Ballyhaunis and Cloonfad recently and while Cllr Cribben says people were very happy with the standard of works, some issues were highlighted to him.
He says he was made aware of a situation in the Tooreen/Aghamore area where a funeral cortege had to travel on a very substandard road because of a detour due to the works and Cllr Cribben says this situation should not be allowed happen again.
He says money should be taken out of the overall budget for the project prior to it starting, so that these detour roads can be upgraded to council standard.
