A Ballyhaunis based Cllr has asked Mayo County Council to write to the Joint Policing Committee to put the issue of CCTV cameras in Ballyhaunis on its agenda.
Fine Gael Cllr John Cribben was responding to a number of break-ins in the Ballyhaunis area over the past few months.
He says some of those broken into brought him to their homes to show him the damage that was caused by the break-ins and outline the items of monetary and sentimental value which were taken.
Cllr Cribben says he is not a member of the Joint Policing Committee so made the request at this week’s meeting of Claremorris Municipal District to have it included on the agenda for the next meeting of the JPC.
He says he has been informed by Gardai that the crime rate drops significantly in areas were CCTV cameras are installed and he wants them placed on all approach routes to Ballyhaunis Town.
