Members of the Gallagher family from Ballyhaunis are in Dublin this evening, where the Lord Mayor of Dublin will host a reception in recognition of the decision by the US Navy to name a warship after Corporal Patrick Gallagher.

Bob as he was known - a native of Derrintogher, Ballyhaunis - was killed in Vietnam on 1967, shortly after being awarded the Navy Cross for bravery for saving the lives of three of his comrades in an earlier attack.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the USS Gallagher will be named after him.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Neil Ring is hosting a reception in the mansion House this evening which will be attended by Government Ministers, Oireachtas members from Mayo and representatives of the US Navy.
