Two men in their 20's were fatally injured in a single vehicle road collision on the Killala Road in Ballina last night.
The collision occurred at about 11.15 pm when a car, carrying three men, collided with a tree near the Costcutter store on the Killala Road.
One man in his late 20's was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two men - also in their 20's - were taken to Mayo University Hospital where one was later pronounced dead.
The third man remains in a serious condition in hospital.
Gardai say the Killala Road in Ballina is closed to facilitate a forensic examination, and local diversions are in place.
The road is closed from Leigue Cemetery to Gillespie's Garage.
Motorists travelling from Ballina towards Killala should divert via the Gurteen roundabout on the Crossmolina Road.
Motorists travelling from Killala towards Ballina should turn left before Coca Cola and go through Belleek.
Meanwhile, HGVs travelling from Killala towards Ballina should divert after Asahi and use the road by Killala Rock and Mullafarry, while HGVs travelling from Ballina towards Killala should take the Crossmolina Road and turn right for Moygownagh.
The road is expected to remain closed for much of the day.
