214 motorists have been arrested in Mayo to date this year, for driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
The figures were confirmed by the Chief Superintendent for the Mayo division Pat Diskin, as he issued a warning to motorists not to drink and drive this Christmas.
Drink driving is a contributory factor in many road collisions, and Gardai say 9 people have been fatally injured on Mayo roads so far in 2018 - 7 drivers, one passenger and one pedestrian.
Chief Supt. Diskin says he makes no apologies for the increased number of Garda checkpoints- particularly in the mornings - and confirmed he has increased the number of Gardai working in the Road Traffic Unit.
