While most of us are enjoying a break from work over the festive season, the volunteers at the North Mayo Horse Rescue Sanctuary are continuing to care for abandoned horses this Christmas.

The sanctuary, located at Knockegan outside Ballina, provides a safe home for horses and donkeys that have for the most part been abandoned or neglected.

The organisation runs a charity shop in Ballina to assist in covering the costs involved in looking after the animals, and always welcome more volunteers to help out with the work involved in caring for horses and donkeys.

Midwest News visited the sanctuary recently and spoke to its founder Gerry Ginty about the 20 animals currently being looked after at the facility.
