A Mayo Senator is urging women artists across the county to apply for a new bursary which offers grants of up to €20,000 per individual or group.

On the 100th anniverary of women's right to vote, the Markievicz bursaries, announced recently by the Minister for Culture and Heritage Josepha Madigan, provide the support for female artists to produce new work that reflects the role of women in the period covered by the centenary commemorations and beyond.

The scheme will open for submissions in mid-January, and awards will be made to 5 artists or writers - working alone or collaborating with others.

Senator Michelle Mulherin is surging women artists and writers in Mayo to apply for the new bursaries.
