A Sligo Councillor has called on the local authority to write to the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross and Moyagh Murdock, CEO of the Road Safety Authority, to clarify an anomaly that exists regarding drivers licences.

Fine Gael Cllr Dara Mulvey says people returning from the USA can drive in Ireland for 12 months on their existing US licence but must then go through the full drive licensing procedure, after the 12 months has elapsed.

Cllr Mulvey says they must first pass a driver theory test, apply for a learner permit, complete and complete a course of Essential Driver Training lessons.

He says this can incur huge costs and may also affect insurance costs.

Cllr Mulvey says we want to welcome people from the US who want to work and settle in Ireland, so we must address this issue.
