The Revenue Commissioners have offered a ship that could be sunk in Killala Bay to provide an artificial reef which would attract divers to the area.

The project is a long-term ambition of Fianna Fail Councillor Michael Loftus, who's also a member of the Grainne Uaile Sub-Aqua club.

A feasibility study was carried out almost a decade ago into plans to sink a former Royal Navy destroyer in Killala Bay but the plans did not materialise at that time.

Now, Revenue have offered a ship that was confiscated for importing cigarettes illegally, and Councillor Loftus is hoping both Mayo and Sligo County Councils will look again at the project, which he believes could generate millions of euro for the region from visiting tourists.
