New by-laws have been approved, to control the consumption of alcohol in public places in Ballyhaunis town, including the Friary grounds.

The draft by-laws went on public display in early January, and only one submissions was received, from Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce, in favour of the proposal.

The by-laws were proposed a year ago by Ballyhaunis-based FG Councillor John Cribben, who said the laws were needed to prevent the consumption of alcohol on the streets of the town and in the Friary Grounds, where he said there's a tendency for groups to gather and consume drink.

At this week's meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District, councillors agreed to formally adopt the new by-laws from the end of this month - the 31st March.
